L.  O thou who art the one true God,/ save us from  undying worms and  from unquenchable fire/ from the gnashing of teeth and from lamentations/.

L.  O thou who art the one true God/, save us from  fears and from `sudden shocks/ from all unbearable punishments and from your word uttering/  “depart from, I know you not” and from all that  separate us from  you/.

PRAYER BEFORE RETIRING TO SLEEP

L.  O merciful Lord,/ the voice of our prayer knocks at your door./

P.   Prevent not from your devotees the petitions of their needs./ O God/ we call you to assist us in our infirmities./  O good one/  pay attention to the voice of our supplications,/  and grant our petitions in  your mercy./

Take your servants’ humble prayers

Grant us from your treasure vast.

Pardon, mercy and blessings

P.   Give mercy, Exalted One

To stand before Thee, O! my Lord

Waking from my slumber deep

And be fully vigilant

L.   If I,  humble slave of yours

Fall back into sleep again

Let that be with ‘out  a sin

Before your great holiness

P.   If I do wrong while awake

Forgive them Lord, by Thy grace

In case I sinned  in my sleep

Forgive them too mercifully

L.   Give your servant restful sleep

Because of  your humble cross

Save me from all evil dreams

And from those phantoms as well.

P.   As I sleep in peacefulness

Watch me Lord in all this night

And let not rule over me

Evil thoughts and wicked deeds.

L.  Because I’m your cabin boy

Send an angel of the light

To keep me constant company

To guard my body safe and sound

P.   Jesus, Lord, since I did eat

From Thy divine body’s flesh

Let not deadly passions vile

Spring forth in mine inner self.

L.  Let Thy blood stay, as a guard

For me who sleeps in the dark

Give freedom for my good soul

Fashioned after thine image

P.  May  your holy right hand Lord

Guard my body that you made

And let your grace become too

A mighty fortress around me.

May your power keep its vigil

Let my sleep before your throne

Like the favoured incense smell

P.   Let not evil touch my bed

By Thy mother’s  pleas for me

And do not let   him approach

Near my bedroom in this night

L.  By your holy sacrifice

Which relieved my tribulations

You drive off the cruel ghost

From his pressure over me.

P.   You have fulfilled your covenant

Towards me, Thy wretched son

Watch my life with happiness

Because of Thy precious cross

L.  Since you loved me fervently

Even in my putrid wretchedness

Help me praise your loving grace

When I wake up with your help

P.   Show me mercy day by day

To know Thy will in all my ways

And walk honest suitably 

By Thy grace Lord, all my life

L.   O! Messiah,  my Master

Give us,  thine own  handy men

An evening  full of happiness

And night beaming   with goodness

P.   You are true light, Lord of all

Your glory is in the light

Sons of light for evermore

Sing thanks for your radiance.

L.   Thank you Jesus, world's Savior

Bestow Thy grace upon us

In this passing worldly life

And in life which is to come.
