EducationalInstitutions
COLLEGES
Christian Churches have played a very significant role in the realm of education in India. This is especially true of Kerala where the majority of premier educational institutions are run by various Christian denominations. The Malankara Orthodox Church too has greatly contributed to the spread of learning, particularly in the state of Kerala. The Old Seminary (Estd.1815) now known as the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam is one of the earliest centres of English Education in India. Today, the Malankara Orthodox Church is a vibrant presence in the educational scenario of Kerala with hundreds of schools and more than a dozen colleges including some professional ones.
Some of these educational institutions are run by parishes, dioceses or trusts within the church. But a good number of them have been brought under the direct administration of the church under the banner of different corporate managements. Six arts and science colleges have thus been brought under ‘the Corporate Management of Malankara Orthodox Church Colleges.’ These colleges are:-
Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta.
Baselius College, Kottayam.
St.Mary’s College, Sultan Battery.
Kuriakose Gregorios College, Pampady.
Mar Dionysius College, Pazhanji.
St.Cyril’s College, Adoor.
The Constitution for the Management of the Colleges of the Malankara Orthodox Church was passed by the Managing Committee on 5th July 1979 and the same was approved by the Holy Episcopal Synod the very next day. Thus the Constitution came into force on 6th July 1979 and has superseded all other constitutions and rules for the management of the colleges of the Malankara Orthodox Church mentioned above. At the time of the formation of the constitution, there were only three colleges under the aegis of this Corporate Management. Now there are six colleges directly administered by the M.O.C. Management. (See the list above).
The Educational Agency of the above said Corporate Management is the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church represented by the Malankara Metropolitan-cum-Catholicos. The management of the colleges under the corporate management vests in the Governing Board constituted by the Educational Agency in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.
At present, His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Didymus I, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan is the Educational Agency and the President of the Governing Board. His Grace Kuriakose Mar Clemis Metropolitan is serving as the Corporate Manager. Prof.Jacob.K.Mathew (former Principal of Baselius College, Kottayam) is the present Secretary for Collegiate Education. In his capacity as the Secretary of the Corporate Management of M.O.C. Colleges, he laisons between the Governing Board, the Corporate Management and the member colleges.

Mount Horeb Ashramam, a monastic community of the Malankara Orthoodox Church, was started in 1991 with the aim of spiritual fellowship and ecclesiastical mission. The vision of Rev. Dr. C. T. Eapen, Chavadiyil, Adoor, to form a brotherhood that would control the activities of ‘Dr. C. T. Eapen Trust’, initiated by himself, was materialised by H. H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews II. This Trust is spread in 65 acres of land in the banks of Sasthamcotta fresh water lake. In this land, a group of energetic, devoted, unmarried priests under the patronage of H. H. Baselios Mathews II, formed the Mount Horeb Ashramam. Here the ashramam community engaged in bible classes, retreats and spiritual guidance programmes. Presently, H. H. Baselios Marthoma Didymos I is the Managing Trustee.
The ashramam is situated in Kollam district, Kerala, South India. It is about 18 km from Adoor and 25 km from Kollam. Mar Theodosius Memorial Hospital owned by the diocese of Kollam is just 2 km. from the ashramam.
At present, there are 7 members in the ashramam. Fr. V. M. James is the superior. The visiting Bishop is H. G. Zachariah Mar Anthonios (Metropolitan of Kochi Diocese), who is also the Manager of the educational institutions under the Trust. The community is involved in various spiritual activities of the Church as well as in the management of the institutions under the Trust.

Dr. C. T. Eapen Memorial Higher Secondary School
The need for educational Institutions in rural and backward areas had been agitating the minds of many educationists. Rev. Dr. C. T. Eapen, who shared the anxiety, planned to meet this challenge. He made use of his own extensive land on the banks of the lake for establishing a residential school on 1928. The school now functions as an aided Higher Secondary School. It is named to cherish the blessed memory of Rev. Dr. C. T. Eapen. The school conducts classes from class 5. In the Higher Secondary section there are two science batches and one commerce batch. The school celebrated its platinum jubilee in the year 2003 – 04.
St. Thomas Home for Boys
“Home is the place where we gather grace”.
St. Thomas Home for Boys was started in 1983 by then Bishop of Kollam, H. G. Mathews Mar Coorilose. It is a shelter for poor or orphaned boys irrespective of caste, colour and creed. The home provides free education, clothing and stay. It aims to make the children self sufficient and worthy citizens. The home gives utmost care for their spiritual and moral growth. The home has 50 residents from class 5 to those doing technical and degree courses. The expenses of the children are met through donations from well wishers.
St. Basil Bible School and Orientation Center
The origin of the St. Basil Bible School is attributed to the vision and efforts of H. H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews II. It began with the official decision of the Holy Episcopal Synod on 10th March 2000. The Bible School is instrumental in creating spiritual awakening among the members of the Church. The Bible School offers a one month residential course with a CBS Certificate (Certificate in Biblical Studies). Minimum age limit is 15 years. Male and female batches are conducted in alternate months. It is an introductory course to the Holy Scripture and faith of the Church. The Bible School can accommodate 50 students in a batch. About 1500 students have completed this course till date. Diploma in Biblical Studies (DBS), a two year correspondence course is also conducted. Dr. C. T. Eapen Memorial Library is a part of the Bible School providing good collection of spiritual literature for study and research.
Zarephath Family Orientation Centre
Zarephath retreat centre is a beautiful campsite. Those who like to spend time in prayer and contemplation are provided free food and accommodation. The annual retreat programmes of the Holy Synod have been conducted here. It is also the venue for camps and occasional gathering of spiritual organisations of the Church. One day retreat is conducted on every second Friday of the month at the Mar Elia Chapel.
Bishop M.M.C.S.P.M High School
Bishop M.M.C.S.P.M H.S. is an English medium School from L.K.G to Std 10, following state syllabus. It is named in memory of H. G. Mathews Mar Coorilose’ 60th birth anniversary. The school is well known for its cent percent results in S.S.L.C in the past years.
Baselios Mathews II College of Engineering
Baselios Mathews II College of Engineering was a long cherished dream of H. H. Baselios Mathews II. It began in 2002 with the intention of providing quality technical education to youth, especially of our church. The institution offers B.Tech. Degree in four different streams with 60 seats each:

The intercession of Thirumeni along with the other saints is a stronghold for the monastic community and all those related to its activities.

MOSC Medical College Hospital, Kolencherry
With the vision of playing an active role in the development and promotion of health care in and around Kolenchery, in central Kerala, the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical Mission was founded in 1967, by the progressive leaders of the church.
The activities of the Mission were initiated by establishing a hospital in Kolenchery. R.H Ignatius Yakkoob III, Patriarch of Antioch, laid the founclatim stone on June 17, 1967, in memory of H.H. Baselious Geeverghese II, Catholicose of the East and the Malankara Metropolitan.
The Medical Mission Hospital was formally consecrated on September 14, 1970, by H.H Baselious Augen I.
The 100 bed hospital started functioning with Dr K.C. Mammen as its founder director and Mr M. Chackopillai as founder secretary. Since then, the hospital has steadily grown over the years, into a multi-speciality hospital; 650 bed tertiary care center that ranks among the best hospitals in the state.
The community health department of the Mission takes the facilities of the hospital into the community, through a network of peripheral health centers, resident nurses, health volunteers and local co-ordinating bodies.
The Mission also plays a vital role in the comprehensive development of the local community, through income generation programmes and health promotion activities.
Today, the Mission has taken yet another giant step forward with the establishment of a medical college. It is the vision of the Mission that the healers of tomorrow who are educated and empowered by this institution, will work toward the physical and spiritual healing of humanity; to the best of their abilities.
