Within the Vatican State come the St. Peter's Basilica, other Basilicas and Churches, the Vatican proper (the Pontifical Palaces), Castel Gandolfo (Latium, the Pope's summer residence) and the Roman Curial offices. The Roman Pontiff has at present legates in 192 countries / international organisations as Apostolic Nuncios/Pro Nuncios/Delegates.

Patriarch

The word ‘Patriarch’ means father or chief of race, clan or family.  The oldest Canon Law recognized only three patriarchs of Rome, Alexandria and Antioch.  Roman Patriarch was considered first among equals. Today there are two kinds of patriarch in the Church: Eastern Patriarchs who function as the father and head of each church and Western Patriarch who are titular.

Western Patriarchs

The Pope, as bishop of Rome and head of the Latin Church, is also Patriarch of the West.  There were Latin titular patriarchates in Constantinople, Alexandria and Antioch.  They were abolished by Pope Paul VI in June, 1964.  Other Patriarchs of Latin Church are the following.

1.  Historical Notes
The Apostolic Church of St. Thomas Christians has its origin in AD 52 from St.Thomas the Apostle. He was martyred on
July 3rd 72 AD, at Mylapore. The Metropolitan of the "See of St. Thomas" was "Metropolitan and gate of all India". In the course of history this church entered into hierachical relationship with the East Syrian Church and became an autonomous Metropolitan See under the East Syrian Patriarch. The administration was done by the "Archdeacon of all India."

Brief Overview

Background:
The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, goes back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in 12th were followed by European traders beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism under Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU led to independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh.

Romania
Capital: Bucharest.

Historical events and circumstances, whether they are natural disasters, such as fires and earthquakes, or political turmoir, will often influence the availability of records, or their locations.  Awareness of such events may help you to learn more about your ancestors, and possibly lead you to additional research resources.

Of note in Romanian history:
With the Decree nr. 358 of December 1st, 1948, the whole Romanian Church united with Rome was declared illegal.  Many Bishops and Priests were executed or emprisoned.  In 1964, Church-state relations changed for the better, and in 1990 conditions improved, with the establishment of diplomatic relation with the Holy See and a restored hierarchy.  (See: Relatii bilaterale, Sfantul Scaun Relatii diplomatice.)

The Catholic Church in Russia: Its History, Present Situation and Problems, Perspectives, by Thaddaeus Kondrusiewicz, Apostolic Administrator of European Russia,
Taken from remarks originally presented at The Aid to the Church in Russia Conference, January 17, 18 1998 in Northern Virginia, U.S.A. - "...The first Catholic parishes in Russia were established in the twelfth century: one in Smolensk and two others in Novgorod. Seven centuries ago five Catholic parishes were established, one in Azov and four in Astrakhan. Finally, the Catholic Church’s normal hierarchical structure was established in Russia in 1782, when the Mogilev Archdiocese was created to cover the largest territory in the world.  Thus before 1917 there were already two dioceses in Russia: Mogilev with its episcopal see in St. Petersburg and Tiraspol with its episcopal see in Saratov...Unfortunately the year 1917 came. An incredible persecution of religion was organized..."
