History
The series of consultations,
with a view to Church Union in North India, began in 1929. Eventually on the
"basis of negotiations" prepared by a series of Round Table Conferences a plan
of Church union drawn up. A negotiating committee was constituted in 1951 by the
Church bodies concerned - which were the Unwasited Church of Northern India, the
Church of India, Pakistan, Burma and Ceylon, the Methodist Church in Southern
Asia and the Council of the Baptist Churches in Northern India. In 1957, the
Church of the Brethren and the Disciples of Christ also joined in the
negotiations. The plan reached its fourth and final edition in 1965 and, on that
basis, the Church Union in North India was inaugurated on 29 November, 1970
in Nagpur. However, at the last moment, the Methodist Church in Southern Asia
Decided not to join the union.
The concern for unity of the
Church grew out of a zeal for the mission of the Church, because a divided
Church could not bear witness to the one Gospel and the one Lord in a country
like India with diverse religions, languages, races and cultures. Through the
process of negotiations and prayerful seeking of the guidance of Holy Spirit
unity was achieved in the understanding and practice of the sacraments of
Baptism and the Lords Supper, the three-fold ministry of
Bishops, Presbyters and Deacons and in the
organisational structures of Pastorates, Dioceses and the Synod, Episcopacy was
received and accepted as both constitutional and historic. Provision has been
made for diverse liturgical practices and understandings of the divine
revelation, provided that these do not violate the basic Faith and Order of the
Church or disrupt the unity and fellowship within the Church.
The
Church of North India (CNI), the communion of six
Christian Churches of North Inidia, was born on Nov. 29, 1970 at Nagpur. The United Church of
Northern India, the Baptist Churches of Northern India (British Baptists), the
Churches of the Brethren in India, the Disciples of Christ
(Anglican), the Methodist Church (British and Australia
Conference) were the Churches that constituted the
union.
Deliberations
towards the unity of Churches took of in 1929.
It was the first round-table conference at Lucknow that proposed the idea of
unity. The Australian Churches of Church
Mission, Australian Methodist Church, the
Weslyan
Methodist Church, the Methodist Episcopal
Church and United Church of Northern Indian were the promoters.
On
the basis of negotiations and suggestions prepared by the round-table
conference in 1939 and revised in 1940 a plan of Church Union was drawn
up. In 1957, Church of the Brethren and
Disciples of Christ joined the unity negotiations.
A new negotiation committee was set up in 1961, with
representatives from all member Churches.
The
efforts reach its fourth and final stage by 1965. The constitution, White Book, was
made. It was amended in 1974 and
1977. On the basis of these
deliberations the Church of North India was born. All negotiating churches, except the
Methodist Church in Southern Asia got united into one.
The
supreme administrative and legislative body of the Church is Synod. It meets once in three years. Executive Committee of the Synod meets in
between to take provisional decisions. The Synod elects a moderator to head the
Church. He should be a bishop. There is a general secretary who manages
day-to-day administration.
There
are synodal boards in charge of various ministries:
Secondary, Higher, Technical and Theological Education, Medical Work, Social
Service, Rural Development, Literature and Media.
The Church is doing wonderful service to the people
through its 65 hospitals, nine nursing schools, 250 educational institutions
and three technical schools.
The
Church of North India has about 12, 50,000
believers and 26 dioceses. The CNI is for the unity of all Churches in India. The joint council of CNI, CSI and
Marthoma Syrian Church of India is a major step in this
direction.
Most
Rev.Vinod R. Peter of Nagpur is at present the
moderator. The CNI has its headquarters
at New Delhi.
