History: The The Evangelical Church of India was founded by the Oriental Missionary Society, OMS International.  Mr.Charles E.Cowman and Mr.E.Kibourne, the founders commenced OMS ministry in Japan 1901. OMS is non-denominational society with three-fold emphasis upon the establishment of Bible Seminaries, intensive and extensive evangelism and the planting of indigenous national Churches.  OMS Missionaries are working in Korea and China.  It is the fourth largest Protestant body in Japan. In 1941 OMS began its work in India.  It started Bible seminaries at Allahabad and Madras.

The first national Church was planted in 1952.  The OMS Field Executive Committee was in charge of the Church administration through their national and missionary leaders till 1967-’68.  The constitutional amendments of 1969-’70 made Evangelical Church of India (ECI), fully autonomous.  Dr.M.Ezra Sargunam was elected first bishop and was consecrated in 1993.  The Church has today 1200 congregations throughout India.  ECI sends missionaries to Singapore and Malaysia.  In Myanmar ECI has one Bible Schools.

Administration:  The All India Conference (AIC) is the supreme body of the ECI. All officers of the AIC are elected.  The Bishop is the executive head of the Church.  He is the Chairman of AIC executive which consists of the President, Vice Presidents, Secretary, Deputy Secretary, Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer. The Board of Governors is the governing body of the ECI.  The members of the Board of Governors are the office-bearers of the All India Conference.  Area Chairman and two laymen are elected by the All India Conference.

The AIC is divided into Area Conferences which are further divided into districts under which local churches are administered by Elders Committees. Under ECI-OMS Board of Theological Education, Madras Theological Seminary and College and Allahabad Bible Seminary are functioning.  These two are Serampore affiliated colleges.  ECI has eleven other Bible Schools.
