His Holiness Moran Mar Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Syrian Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and all the East, Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church was born on April 21, 1933 in Mosul, Iraq.  He got his elementary education at community schools and continued at St. Ephrem Theological seminary of Mosul.  He graduated in 1954, obtained diplomas in Theology, Philosophy, History, Canon Law, Arabic, Syriac and English.  He was ordained monk in June 6, 1954.  He was appointed secretary to the late Patriarch Ephraim I Barsoum in 1955 and is successor the late Patriarch Yacoob II.  He was ordained priest on Nov. 11, 1957.  He attended Vatican Council II as observer twice (1962, 1963).  He was consecrated Archbishop of Mosul on Nov.17, 1963 and was transferred to Baghdad in 1969.  He was appointed acting Metropolitan of Austria in 1978.  He was elected Patriarch on July 11, 1980 and was enthroned on Sept. 14, 1980.

He is one of the Presidents of the World Council of Churches.

Patriarchate

The book of Acts in its exposition with regard to the rank accorded to St.Peter.   St.Peter took up the leadership of the Church of Jerusalem after Christ’s Crucifixion and resurrection. Even when he was with Jesus as one the twelve disciples, St.Peter acted as the Chief, emissary and spokesperson of the lot. His primacy is underscored biblically which leaves no room to doubt otherwise. By 37 AD Antioch became the capital of the universal Church and St.Peter, its head. Since St. Peter has assumed the leadership of the Church and had make use of Antioch as the capital to lead the Church, those who are ordained as Patriarchs by the church to succeed St.Peter are no doubt the successors and emissaries of St.Peter. The divine grace is handed down from Jesus to St.Peter,  St.Peter to his successors the Metropolitans to Priests, and from Priests to the laity. Thus in the Syrian Orthodox Church the Patriarch represents the first and the foremost link in respect of the apostolic succession and divine priesthood.

The universal Syrian Orthodox Church perceives its strength and Unity in His Holiness the Patriarch, the supreme head of the Church. As the Sucessor of the St.Peter, His Holiness is the embodiment and symbol of unity of the universal Syrian Orthodox Church. This embodiment signifies two type of representative characters. Firstly, as the successor of St.Peter, the patriarch represent him. As St.Peter is the chief shepherd and supreme head, the Patriarch by virtue of his position upholds the unity of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church. Since the Patrirach’s ordination and conornation are deemed to be through the grace of the Holy Ghost and by the will of God, the first representative character is bestowed from above and is divine. So the Patriarch as the high priest the Universal Church, represents Jesus Christ when he celebrates the Holy Eucharist. Secondly the Patriarch as the chief Shepherd of the Church, is the emissary of the entire body of believers. The church is not only an invisible spiritual fellowship but is also a historical reality. So, all the attributes of the Church like one, Holy, Chatholic and Apostolic must also become a historical reality. And the Patriarchs who are ordained from time to time and represent the universal Syrian Church as the Supreme heads, make the unity of the Church a reality.

This Church enjoys the greatest prestige in the history of Christendom since it is the first Church  which was established in Jerusalem out of the Apostles, Preachers and other  converted Jews, and was grafted in Antioch by those who were converted from  among the Arameans and other gentile elements. It can justifiably claim the wealthiest liturgical and musical heritage, besides a proud theological and missionary record. The Church and it's parishioners still use Syriac-Aramaic the language spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ. It suffered untold hardships and tragedies including massacres and repeated transfer of the See of the Patriarchate from one locality to another due to political and other  developments until it settled in Damascus-Syria. Historians declare that the  survival of this Church was nothing short of a miracle. The  Church provides spiritual guidance to over four million parishioners throughout  the World.

The Universal Syrian Orthodox Church (USOC) today consists of 29 dioceses, of which 10 are in India.  The USOC has about 5 million followers in different parts of the world of which good majorities are in India.  The USOC is a member of the WCC.

Faith

The Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church’s faith and liturgy are similar to those observed by the Universal Syrian Orthodox church such as the belief in Trinity, Jesus Christ’s incarnation as the saviour, Holy Cross, the Church, Holy Bible, the Divinity of the traditions, the creed of Nicea, the observations of the sacramental rites, intercession of St.Mary and Saints, rites after death, prayers for the dead, daily prayers, lent, fasting, celebrating holy Qurbana on Sunday and other sacred days, church consecration, the three stages of priesthood which has the Apostolic succession that comes from St. Peter through the Holy Throne of Antioch preserving the canonic laying on the hands, baptism, the Holy Cross, the three Holy Synods and the Relics of Holy fathers etc..

The Syrian Orthodox church accepts only three Ecumenical Synods namely Nicea (A.D.325), Constantinople (A.D. 381) and Ephesus (A. D. 431) as the universal Synods. The Church meticulously observe all faith declaration of the Nicean Creed. The western church at a later stage appended a statement to this creed attributing the Holy Ghost to be originating from Son also, (Filioque) which we do not accept. The Church was totally merged with the divine element and became one (Monophysite). The church believes that Jesus Christ is one Person out of two natures namely human and divine. He is perfect man and perfect God. But Western Church had wrongly construed us Monophysites. This was an unfortunate error that creeped into the Werstern Church History. But this anomally was removed as a result of the deliberations at Vienna under the auspices of Pro-Orienete’. The faith of Orthodox Churches like Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian and Indian Church are in line with the beliefs of Syrian Churches. The Syrian orthodox church assiduously teach its members that the Church is One, Holy, Catholic and Apostholic enshrined with all elements of full-fledged Church and it paves way for salvation and that it is the duty of each member to obey the directions of the Church. The sacramental rites such as Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Confession, Priestly Orders, Matrimony and Sacrament to sick are held sacred and the members have ardent belief in their efficacy. Among those the first three rites are not only given together but are most important and each member has to partake in these without fail. The Syrian Church believes in infant baptism. Hot and cold water mixed together is used for baptism.

The Eucharist is believed to represent the Body and Blood of Christ. But we do not accept the ‘transubstatiation’ of the Roman Catholic Church, whereby the bread and wine transmuted into the very Body and Blood of Christ. Leavened bread and wine are used in the Eucharist and given to the believers as the sacred Body and Blood.

Then Holy Bible is revered as the word of God. Every Sundays and other sacred days, Bible is invariably read. During the sacramental rites and common prayers the Bible is read by the priest and as a mark of reverence candles are lit and held either sides. The traditions of the church that have been handed down by the early Church Fathers are revered fervently and observed strictly as that of Bible. The Holy Bible and the traditions of the Church are esteemed as the criteria of the Church’s faith.

The departed souls are remembered in prayers and Holy Eucharist is conducted in their memory. There is another practice of annually celebrating the day of demise of any person at his house with prayer and offering of incense at the tomb.

St.Mary is the perpetual virgin and mother of God who is esteemed as the first among the saints. Inercessory prayers are offered in the names of the Saints, Churches are built in their venerated memory and their relies are honored and their memories are celebrated Conception for St. Mary is not accepted by the Syrian Church.

The Church teaches that observing lent, refraining from rich food is good for the spiritual awakening. The Church observes every Wednesday and Friday as day of lent. Also there are five lent annually such as 50 days lent before Easter, the lent of Apostles the lent in the name of St.Mary, the lent before Christmas and the 3 day lent (Nineweh).

The church believes that it receives Apostolic Benediction and succession through the Patriarchs seated on the throne of St.Peter at Antioch and the Patriarchs are the successors of St. Peter. The Apostolic laying on the hands is regarded to be absolutely essential for the Order of Priesthood. Those priest who have received such ordination only have the authority to perform liturgy and give sacraments. The church teaches the priest to be the designate of Christ and as such he is empowered to forgive sins. The believers make secret confession before the priest forgives the sins in the name of Christ. The Church asserts the need for marriage to those priests who are Vicars of Parishes. But the bishops are unmarried and must adhere to celibacy. The Priests are not allowed to remarry. The Church also preaches that matrimony is sacred and marriage relation is undissolvable.

The Sick are anointed with sacred oil for recuperation and atonement of sins. Basically this sacrament has been conceived for the healing of the sick, but it is now generally misunderstood and observed as the last sacrament. The church expects its members to observe Sunday and sacred days as holy and to refrain from routine engagements. Traditionally there are nine such sacred days a year and they are Christmas, Baptisam of Jesus, His entry into the Church, Gabriel’s Announcement to St. Mary of the impending birth of the saviour, Ascension, Transfiguration, Feast of Cross, the ascension of St. Mary the mother of God and remembrance of St. Peter & St. Paul. In addition to these, other important occasions are St.Thomas day. Passover, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Resurrection during Passion Week. The Syrians do not worship idols but the pictures of Jesus, St. Mary and other Saints are displayed in the Churches and houses. During Prayer, facing east ward is the practice. The monks in monasteries should pray seven times and the laity twice daily. It is also specified that only canonical prayers can be used in public worship. The church believes in the second coming of Jesus and in the last judgment when the righteous would be rewarded with eternal heavenly tranquility and the wicked will be banished to perpetual hell.

Syrian Orthodox Church in India

Who established the church in India ? People belonging to every Christian denomination of Kerala, in one voice would answer St. Thomas. Syrian Orthodox Church also believes so, St.Thomas reached Kodungallur by ship in AD52. The widely accepted tration is that St. Thomas visited various places and baptized many Jews and Hindus and thus began the process of establishing the Church. Middle east countries and kerala had trade relations during the early centuries. So it may not have been difficult for St. Thomas to reach the coasts of Kerala.

St. Thomas is depicted as the apostle of India by the faith, tradition old liturgy, church history, the views of historians etc. The Syrian Orthodox Church Strongly believes that St.Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of the Jesus, had established the Church in India. There exists a strong tradition in Malankara about the arrival of St.Thomas, his mission, death, burial and about the relics of his mortal body. No other country or people make such claim about St.Thomas, As a result of his mission, high Brahmins of Pakalomattam, Shankarapuri, Kalli, and Kaliangal had joined church and member from these house were ordained as priests. Besides, he is believed to have founded churches at Malankara Paloor, Kottakkacu, Chayal ( Nilakkal), Niranam, Quilon, and Gokamangalam and celebrated Holy Qurbana in these churches. He later went to China to spread Gospel and returned to India and during his mission, he was killed by fanatics and was buried at Mylapore in the state of Madras, South India. However his relics were taken to Edessa in the 4th Century at the instance of the then Patriarch of Antioch.

Seminary
The Malankara Syrian Orthodox church has a Theological Seminary (M.S.O.T. Seminary) with all modern facilities, maintaining a very high standard and is functioning as the brain of the Church. It is situated on a small hill called "Udayagiri", (which means hill of the rising sun). Udayagiri lies in a small village called Vettickal, about 4 kms. away from Mulanthuruthy, a small town, about 25 kms. away from Cochin. Being an apostolic Church, the Syrian Church gives topmost priority to the Theological Seminary among all other institutions. The Church accomplishes its mission in the world mainly through educated, trained and dedicated priests and the Seminary is the pottery where such individuals are molded. In addition to this, the seminary functions as an important centre for various other activities. In the seminary functions as Ecumenical secretariat of the church. This secretariat conducts ecumenical dialogue with other churches and provides venue and leadership for such dialogues. There is a publication wing in the Seminary which brings out the necessary books for the church. The seminary also imparts leadership to conduct conferences as well as leadership training camps. The seminary is a treasure-trove that maintains the faith and traditions of the Syrian Church and is also a center of study and research. The seminary is affiliated to the Serampore Univercity and it awards the B.D. Degree to those who successfully complete the Theological Course.

Very Rev. Chor Episcopus Adai Jacob B.A., B.D., B.Ed., Ph.D is the Principal of M.S.O.T. Seminary, Udayagiri. In addition, he is a member of the Managing Committee and Ecumenical Commission of the Church. Son of Rev. Fr. T.M. Jacob, Fr. Jacob was born on March 14, 1947, became a deacon in 1971 and was ordained to priesthood in 1981.

Administration

The administration of Syrian Orthodox Church has been designed in a three-tied system in which the church, Diocese and the Parish Church from the three trusts. As a General Body of the Church, Malankara Syrian Christian Association is convened once in every 5 years. From every parish according to the Strength of its membership, laity and clergy participate in it as delegates. The association elect the Managing Committee, Metropolitan Trustee, Church Secretary and Church Trustee for the smooth administration of the day to day affairs of the Church. Moreover, there is a working committee consisting of members elected from the Managing Committee as well as  the officials elected by the Association which functions as the cabinet of the Church.

The Church is divided into various diocese under Metropolitans. The diocesan Association that meets once a year take important decisions regarding the administration of each diocese. The diocesan council elected by the General body of the diocese functions as the Governing body and give shape to the programmes of the diocese and implement those that are approved by the General Body. A priest who is elected as the diocesans Secretary maintains the minutes and presents the accounts and budget on behalf of the council. The tenure of office of the council and Secretary is three years.

Through the parish churches are governed by the diocese on spiritual matters, all other affairs are dealt by the parish themselves, as semi independent trusts. The administration of parish is vested with the general body of the parish. Normally the general body of the parish meets twice in a year. The Parish managing committee elected by the general body, implement the decisions of the general body. The parish trustee who is elected by the general body looks after the finance of the parish and execute the decisions as per the recommendation of the managing committee. The parish secretary who is elected along with the parish trustee, maintains and presents the minutes of the general body as well as that of the Managing Committee.
